When repair makes sense
- Surface wear: light scaling or pitting from salt and freeze-thaw, with solid concrete underneath.
- Hairline or small cracks: cracks that are not moving or widening.
- Chipped edges: damage at the front edge of a tread or a corner.
- Loose railings: anchors that have worked loose in otherwise sound concrete.
If the steps are leaning, sinking or crumbling throughout, repair usually won’t hold. See concrete steps replacement.
Winter care after a repair
Grand Rapids winters bring repeated freeze-thaw cycles and plenty of de-icing salt. Ask your contractor which de-icers are gentler on concrete, whether a sealer is a good idea for your steps and how often to reapply it. Keeping water from pooling on the treads helps too.
